Doppler ultrasound

Doppler ultrasound

Doppler ultrasound in the Department of Phlebology.

Introduction

Doppler ultrasound examination (examination of the vascular system using ultrasound) is an indispensable and non-invasive diagnostic method that allows a detailed assessment of blood flow in blood vessels, both venous and arterial. Using ultrasound equipment and the Doppler phenomenon, specialist physicians can perform a complete imaging of the veins and arteries in real time. The Doppler ultrasound examination assesses the morphology of the vessels, their patency and the direction and rate of blood flow. In a Doppler ultrasound examination - in addition to the vascular system - the subcutaneous tissue and deep structures (located inter-arterially) are always assessed.

How do I prepare for a Doppler ultrasound scan?

This unique combination of expertise allows for a comprehensive assessment of vascular conditions from both a diagnostic and clinical perspective.

The Department of Phlebology specialises in ultrasound diagnosis of the vascular system, with a particular focus on:

  • comprehensive diagnosis of the venous system of the lower limbs, pelvic floor, pelvis and abdominal cavity;
  • assessment of superficial and deep veins;
  • diagnosis of complications of venous disease;
  • tests to exclude venous thrombosis;
  • full-profile testing of the arterial system
  • qualification for phlebology procedures performed under ultrasound and X-ray equipment;
  • monitoring the effects of the treatment carried out.

At the Phlebology Clinic we work closely with vascular surgeons and phlebologists, which allows for the rapid implementation of appropriate treatment when abnormalities are detected.

Mostly
questions asked

  • No, the Doppler ultrasound examination is completely painless and non-invasive. The patient may only feel a slight pressure on the skin or subcutaneous tissue as the ultrasound transducer moves across the body.

  • It is not necessary to discontinue medication before the Doppler ultrasound examination. You should continue your existing treatment as prescribed by your doctors. Precise information regarding the preparation for the Doppler ultrasound examination is provided by our Registry before each ultrasound examination.

  • Yes, the test is completely safe for pregnant women and is often performed in the diagnosis of venous disease in pregnant women, especially those with advanced pelvic venous insufficiency and at high risk of venous thrombosis (e.g. in women with multiple pregnancies or diagnosed congenital hypercoagulability).

  • A standard Doppler ultrasound examination takes between 15 and 45 minutes. It all depends on the complexity of the problem and the number of areas to be examined.

  • A description of the Doppler ultrasound examination performed at the Phlebology Clinic in Warsaw is given to the patient immediately after the consultation and ultrasound examination.
