Does it make sense to treat veins before pregnancy? The Phlebology Clinic / Phlebology blog / Does it make sense to treat veins before pregnancy? Does it make sense to treat veins before pregnancy? Żyły w ciąży 07.10.2024 3 min To treat veins or not to treat them? This is one of the more common dilemmas for ladies planning their first or next pregnancy! This is a very important issue and probably the greatest challenge of modern phlebology. Our long-standing work with pregnant women and their thorough ultrasound assessment has taught us a lot over the years. We have learned that many of the venous pathologies can already be predicted before the first pregnancy, some after the first or second pregnancy. Many venous problems can be avoided, e.g. by ordering the wearing of well-fitting compression stockings or just by teaching ladies how to lie down to sleep, comments phlebologist, Dr Justyna Wilczko. The biggest mistake in vein treatment historically has been to persuade ladies to "do nothing" until after the birth of their last child. Our research on a rather large female population shows (about 1000 women) that up to 15% ladies already have the first symptoms of venous insufficiency before the birth of their 1st child. If we consider that the time until the first pregnancy continues to increase and is already more than 30 years in Poland, it becomes understandable that this is an increasingly common problem. At the Phlebology Clinic, we are based on the premise that identifying the cause of venous disease as early as possible enables us to treat it effectively. However, it is important that this is done from the right side and not from behind. Many ladies who come to us (as young as 18-25 years of age) complain of heavy legs, excessive spider veins or tortuous venous dilatations on the legs. Many of them suffer from prolonged periods (>7 days), lower abdominal pain and discomfort in the legs during the first days of menstruation. These are symptoms that should always be noted and the patient should be referred for Doppler ultrasound of the veins of the lower limbs, small pelvis and abdominal cavity. The Phlebology Clinic uses a special examination protocol that allows the significance and severity of venous disease to be determined very quickly, which most commonly include pelvic insufficiency and related venous insufficiency of the lower limbs. We should remember that the most common phenomena leading to venous insufficiency of the lower limbs in young people are: hereditary susceptibility of the veins to stretching (varicose veins form more easily in these people) and various unfavourable anatomical conditions, of which we most frequently diagnose the so-called 'varicose veins'. venous compression syndromes. It also appears that increasingly taking up weight-bearing exercise also accelerates the development of venous insufficiency. #ce grey #justynawilczko #tomaszgrzela #zdrowezyly #phlebology #Health Similar articles Żyły w ciąży 07.10.2024 6 min Varicose veins in pregnancy - causes, symptoms, prevention and treatments Czytaj więcej Take advice from Dr Venus, our virtual phlebology expert!
